In the Moment Planning
Planning in the Moment
At our school, we embrace a “Planning in the Moment” approach to learning, which focuses on responding to children’s interests and needs as they arise. Rather than following rigid, pre-set plans, our educators observe and interact with students during play and daily activities, using these moments as opportunities for meaningful teaching. These spontaneous interactions—known as teachable moments—allow staff to extend learning in a way that feels natural and engaging for each child. We also celebrate ‘Wow Moments’, those special times when a child achieves something new or demonstrates exceptional progress. These moments are recorded and shared to recognise each child’s unique journey and successes.
Focus Children
Each week, we select a small number of focus children. For these children, staff pay extra attention to their interests, development, and learning opportunities. Observations and interactions are used to plan activities that build on their curiosity and skills, ensuring they receive personalised support and challenge.
Benefits for Children
This approach supports children’s natural development by encouraging them to take ownership of their learning. It builds confidence and self-esteem as they see their ideas valued and extended. Planning in the moment also promotes problem-solving, communication, and social skills, as children learn through real-life experiences and interactions. By following their interests and using teachable and wow moments, children remain motivated and enthusiastic, creating a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
